Jen009 - A surprise 'on the beat'
Jenna gets a surprise while patrolling the streets with Tony...
Sunday morning.
Jenna hated working on Sundays. Hated it!
And the bottle of wine last night wasn’t helping things, at all.
Still, at least this weekend was earning her next Thursday and Friday off work – for the opening two nights of the Phantom of the Opera. Fair trade, she conceded.
She checked in at the police station – promptly, at 9am on the dot – and got straight out ‘on the beat’ with Tony. They had an uneventful morning ahead of them – trudging the streets with the
sole purpose of showing a police presence in the town; neither of them expected any action.
It was raining; the skies were grey and gloomy, but Jenna’s mood was jubilant. OK, the pointless arguments with James over breakfast had dampened her spirits temporarily, but she soon shook
that off and focused on the positive – her plan to unite Brendan and James over a takeaway and a few drinks had worked... they were finally getting along! And James, to his credit, had been
quite mature about apologising to Brendan – which counted for a lot! Maybe there was a future with him after all?
“Any more news on that Range Rover we chased through town the other day?” Tony asked as they strolled.
“Not yet. Forensics are going over it with a fine comb... we should get the results back in a few days”
“Strange one that, wasn’t it?”
“It sure was”
They strolled along Almshouse street and into St James square at a slow deliberate pace. Jenna was about to make some more observations about the Range Rover fiasco when she spotted the silver
Peugeot parked on the opposite side of the road and the words died in her mouth.
In the driver’s seat, she saw a bulky guy with a tanned face, and sitting next to him was a girl she recognised; a girl she had seen in town with her ex-friend Anne-Marie – one of the residents
from that strange house in the woods no doubt. Jenna scowled at the car and speculated... what were they waiting there for?
“Everything ok?” Tony asked, sensing her interest.
“Yeah... fine”
She had no firm basis for her grudge against the residents of that strange house in the woods; but she always got a weird feeling when she saw them; they just weren’t normal.
“Isn’t that your brother, Brendan?” Tony asked, drawing Jenna’s attention.
She looked up and saw Brendan pacing along the pavement on the other side of the street, head bowed, walking quickly, looking typically handsome in his lightweight grey overcoat.
“Yes, it is” she said, “He must be going for his morning walk. He loves walking...”
She was about to shout over to him when he drew level with the silver Peugeot and she watched in disbelief as he opened the back door and climbed inside. The guy in the front said something to
him, and she watched, dumbfounded, as the car pulled away and disappeared around the corner.
“He makes friends quickly” Tony chuckled, “He’s only been here five minutes hasn’t he?”
Jenna was too bewildered to speak.
She was fuming!
What the hell was Brendan doing? Had he befriended those freaks?!
Where were they going? Up to their weird mansion house in the woods no doubt...
“You ok?” Tony asked, noticing the paper-thin line that used to be her mouth.
“Fine” she snapped.
She glanced at her watch... 9:15am... she’d take lunch at 12:30, and she’d go and pay the freaks a visit herself... someone owed her an explanation!
